5 Local Foods To Try In Caribbean

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Caribbean? Bob Marley and the exotic beaches, right? But many of you don’t know that Caribbean is a food lover’s paradise. It is a treat for not just your visual senses but also your palate. The food here is fiery, flavorful and a feast for your taste buds. Just like each island has its unique story, each dish also has one. Here are the top go-to foods in the Caribbean:

Coucou and Flying Fish in Barbados

They call Barbados as the land of the flying fish thanks to this delightful national dish – Coucou and the Flying Fish. It’s steamed fish with a touch of spices and veggies cooked in a steaming pan of lime juice and caramelized onions and served on a bed of cornmeal with a spicy sauce. There is a friend variant too.

Jamaican Jerk Chicken

Reggae music has been the biggest export of Jamaica. Perhaps, Jamaica Jerk Chicken comes in close at second. Today, it has become a popular food in various restaurants and menus all over the globe. It is a simple mix of chicken massaged with a mix of sweet, tangy and hot spices. Next, you place it over a bed of flaming charcoal on the barbeque stand. Now all you need is a citrus cocktail, sunset and the reggae music by your side.

Bahamas Conch Fritters

A popular dish all around Bahamas and Caribbean, it is a wonderful deep-friend snack, which is an amalgamation of sea snails, celery, onions, peppers, eggs and flour. Next, the cooks roll these ingredients into balls after which they are deep fried into the flaming oil.

Boca Chica of Dominican Republic

Sun, sand and seafood make a perfect combo. And in the Dominican Republic, seafood is best enjoyed with the lip-smacking Boca Chica. A delectable dish made from a red snapper fish which is infused with garlic, onions, paprika and bell peppers. Next, it is deep-fried and served with the greasy helping of tostones, which are nothing but fried green plantains. Yes, it’s oily, but it packs a punch with plenty of nutrients and flavor. And hey, you’re on vacation, right?

Stewed Salt Fish with Dumplings, Spicy Plantains, and Breadfruit at St Kitts & Nevis

The West Indians love their seafood. This is yet another version of it. This stew is hearty, soulful and filling served with fish, spicy plantains, exotic coconut dumplings and breadfruit. It’s as colorful and flavorful as the enamoring islands of St. Kitts and Nevis. Get ready to fill your plate and palate with this delightful local food.
